Being a Leader free essay sample

Being the line leader was not my idea of fun. Don’t get me wrong, some kids loved it. They liked the power. Where ever they went, the class went. I always saw it as being kind of embarrassing. The thought of having my classmates stare at the back of my head while we walked down the school hallway, made me feel uneasy, until it was my turn to be line leader. Waking up that morning, I tried not to think about it but in the back of my head, I knew today was my day. I never considered myself much of a leader or one to possess such qualities, but little did I know I was wrong. As I was getting off the bus I had that butterfly feeling in my stomach. Normally, something like this wouldn’t bug a person, but when you’re seven years old, you’re in your own world. We will write a custom essay sample on Being a Leader or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I quietly put my backpack in my cubby outside the classroom, quietly walked in, and quietly sat down in my desk, the usual, just quieter. I was hoping my teacher wouldn’t notice me and maybe she would forget it was my day to be the leader. As she got up from her desk, Mrs. Miller walked over to the door, where the leadership calendar just happened to be posted. When she announced that I was today’s leader, shivers went up and down my spine. I was horrified. What if I go the wrong direction, or forget where I’m supposed to be leading at all? As the leader I am supposed to know these things! Mrs. Miller asked for everyone to line up behind me and announced that we would be going to the library and some of my nerves went away. I knew exactly where the library was. â€Å"This will be easy.† I said I turned off the lights, and proceeded down the hallway to the library. â€Å"Hey, this is kind of cool!† I thought to myself. It felt surprisingly good to be in front and have control. I would never let myself forget that day. After I ‘graduated’ elementary school, it was off to the middle school where many leadership roles awaited my classmates and I, and believe me, I dove right in. On the first day of 6th grade I stood up in front of my classmates and presented my idea for the name of our class. I liked being able to communicate my feelings, and I liked that others enjoyed my ideas. Seventh grade was a big year. I was voted by my sixth grade teachers to be a part of student council, which in itself is a leadership group. I had the time of my life partaking in all sorts of activities. The next year I was voted as a chair head of the Birthday committee, where I got to express my feelings and show my sense of leadership off to the other members of my group. My leadership qualities followed me outside of school to soccer, where I gave a speech to my team about how I thought I would be a great captain. I was voted captain which gave me even more confidence and made me feel that with my leadership, I could do anything. In my high school years, I have grown to be very outspoken which helps when taking the leadership roll in the classroom. By developing leadership skills at a young age, I feel that I have a great sense of guidance now, which is more important to me than ever. With my leadership skills, I feel that I can accomplish anything!

Alcatraz essays

Alcatraz essays In western California, in San Fransisco Bay, Alcatraz rises 130 feet above the surface of the bay and is about 1755 feet long. The United States Depeartment of Justice used the island as a Military Prison from 1868 until 1933, when it became a federal prison for dangerous prisoners. The prison was closed in 1963. In 1972 Alcatraz became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The island has many natural features such as gardens, tide pools, and bird colonies. This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the occupation of the Alcatraz Island by Indians of all tribes. The name Alcataz derived from the spanish word Alcatraces. It was given to the island by a spanish explorer namedm Juan Manuel de Ayala. The name Alcatraz means pelican or strange bird. Well known prisoners that stayed in Alcatraz were Al Capone, George Machine-Gun Kelly, Alvin Karpis, and Arthur Doc Barker. At Alcatraz, a prisoner had 4 rights: food, clothing, shelter, and medical care. Everything else was a privilege and had to be earned. Privileges that had to be earned were: working, corresponding with and having visits from family members, access to the prison library, and recreational activities. Over the 29 years that the federal prison operated, 36 men, including 2 who tried to escape twice, were involved in 14 separate escape attempts. 23 were caught, 6 were shot and killed, and 2 drowned. No one ever succeeded in escaping from Alcatraz. Although, to this day, there are 5 prisoners listed as missing and presumed dead. The average population for the prison was between 260 and 275 prisoners. The prison never once reached its maximum capacity of 336. Some prisoners considered Alcatraz better than other Federal Prisons. After the prison closed, it was basically abandoned. Many ideas were brought up for the island. From 1909 through 1911, Alcatraz wa ...

Technology Strategies. Kudler Company Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Technology Strategies. Kudler Company - Essay Example The aspect of selection and implementation of relevant changes in technological advancements for the improvement of the company needs expert opinions as it would flop if it were to be done without following the due process as stipulated in rules and guidelines that provide the guidance on the way forward. In light of this fears, an approach is proposed that will be good in a contingent way as well as in a way that accommodates a socio-technical approach (Floyd, 2010). One of the mostly applied strategies includes the Initial Public Offering. This is also referred to as the IPO. This strategy is often resorted to by new companies that are out to facilitate the expansion of their operations. The IPO serves such crucial functions that are elementary and of significant importance to the company. It occurs when the firm offers common shares openly to the public. There can always be possibility to raise capitals through commissions of exchanges that are registered to undertake the public offering. When the company takes this step, it must be ready to face an obvious amount of public scrutiny. The company however faces increased responsibility that are accompanied by opportunities to strengthen the relations between the firm owners and the major stakeholders that make the wheels of change turn and move forward. (Floyd, 2010) One such company that practices IPO is the Kudler Fine Foods. The company has made immense growth on the competitive field of busin ess. The company tends to issue preferred securities or common stocks and that in the long run create essential growth of capital and its acceleration. Kudler Company can achieve accelerated growth through hiring of new personnel, expanding development and the forms of research that are involved. The major effect of this strategy is to enable the company penetrate into global investment base to facilitate large investment of capital. Kudler Fine Foods is now required to keep the stakeholders up to date on the management strategies of the company as well as the business operations and legal obligations as they arise. Working under public examination works well to keep the company on toes. (Paul, 2007) The second strategy that a firm can opt for in bringing in a new perspective of seeing things is that of acquisition. Through acquisition, a company acquires on or more of the companies that work within the same market. Acquisitions often get done with the main aim of growing and expand ing the firm. One such firm that practices such form of strategy is the BOC gases. They have acquired other smaller manufacturers of gases and put them under the same umbrella. (Lawson, 2006) Acquisition can happen in two possible ways. One way is that of mutual understanding whereby the companies agree to join hands or to be acquired. The other form is that of forceful takeover which can mostly just be done by companies that are publically traded. When the latter happens, more than 50 % of the acquired company is taken under control by the big company that forcefully takes over. However it looks more than obvious that the situation for BOC gases. The other smaller firms that are under the umbrella were mostly acquired in a willing seller and willing buyer basis whereby the small firms opted for this option as they may have noticed their profits going down. The companies’ desire for growth can now be achieved from a comfortable position whereby they are secure. This form of s trategy also enables the bigger company to venture into new geographic locations and to expand their base for doing business hence increasing opportunities. (Floyd, 2010) The third strategy that a firm can apply in the growth and expansion is that of merger.

The Stonemason Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

The Stonemason - Essay Example The Stonemason tale is created with a great regard of the history the United States. McCarthy questions who would run the world if history swallows everybody up (74). The African American population regards greatly the efforts displayed by their ancestors in fighting for their freedom and rights. This fact creates the entire legacy that the African American population enjoys. This specific population group believes that they have achieved what they have by right. Additionally, they vow to value what their proprietors fought for and set aside of them. As Brooks writes, Marmee cannot stop weeping as she narrates to March how a slave had had been branded with a red-hot iron on his face (87). The rights of these slaves is what March believes in and in time, March joins the Underground Railroad to help fleeing slaves get to free countries. As an African American descendant, Ben The Stonemason believes that it was by God’s grace they were redeemed from the shadows of racisms. McCarthy points out that ‘we were pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand (64). This shows that the fact they have freedom in the United States the black population feel that they have everything to be thankful for what they enjoy in the modern century. Additionally, McCarthy portrays the African American population in The Stonemason to be very religious. This cultural preference is due to the fact that the legacy of the Civil War brings out the character of thanks giving to the black population (64). ... In The Stonemason Ben believes that the scripture holds the basic requirements of one behavior, ‘you go against the scripture you are on your own, the man up there is not going to help you’ (McCarthy 63). On a negative note, the African Americans are argued to be misunderstanding the legacy the Civil War brought to the society. This is because of the increased conflicts between them. In The Stonemason, Ben lost his nephew, Soldier, due to the street battles. The creation of gangs in championing for the rights of the youths has gone against what the anc estors fought for in the civil war. However, McCarthy points out that it is these small acts of valor may all that is visible of great movements of courage within (131). The African American population respects and acknowledges the Civil War and the efforts by their predecessors in redeeming the population group, but it is because of him that I am not reduced by these mysteries but am one more among them (McCarthy 97). They value their right to operate without discrimination whatsoever in a nation where their grandparents struggled for recognition in the normal society. In The Stonemason, Ben orders Soldier to stay off the streets and gangs and go to school. He also offers him a working

The Tourism And Its Economic Impact On Industrialized Tourism Essay

The Tourism And Its Economic Impact On Industrialized Tourism Essay This research paper which explains the tourism and its economic impact on industrialized and developing countries has focused mainly on the two major problems that have been experienced by the tourism industry that hampers its progress and development: seasonality and terrorism or crime. The problems are ubiquitous irrespective of the scale of the industry whether it is a small scale or a mammoth firm. Many efforts have been taken in action to cope with these problems but still require more strenuous and painstaking work to be done to overcome these problems. Seasonality is classified into three categories which put some light on the bearings of tourism businesses. Similarly, a research on terrorism and its impact on tourism show how these increasing activities of terrorism have affected tourism. The author of this research paper says that Small Tourism Firms (STFs) has an immense impact on the economic development of the communities and hence being considered as a factor to spur the enhancement the local economies. To support his research the author makes an assertion by giving the example of New Zealand Tourism which states that in New Zealand the tourism is responsible for overall regional development. There industrial revolution is more palpable when dependent agricultural economy is transfigured into free market economy. These changes entail cutback tax, take away of all major subsidies and no check on cost, wages and prices. In spite of Top Down approach, a different, bottom up approach is used which resolves all major concern of classical theory. A bottom-up approach is experienced in very few countries but its capable to tackle the problem of sustainability. Research on Wairarapa Another research Wairarapa (Wellington), depicts that after that demise in agricultural sector, tourism came as a revitalization which further concluded in establishment of wine industries and numerous tourists. This research focuses on the previous work and to develop additional explanation by performing various tests. To satisfy the STFs; research involves the survey and interviews of all people from both public and private sectors. These interviews were framed with the core questions and then analysis of interview-based data was done to answer how the people remarked The Revolutionised Wairarapa. Government Support Various Agencies A Push-and-Pull factor was such a motivating factor to make the people to participate in these small businesses, which contribute to regional development. The diversity was palpable in this path of involvement in the small tourism business; farmers builders, teachers, and doctors were the participants in the tourism industry. The most interesting thing was the womens involvement reflecting the regions strong farming tradition in which activity women were less involved. Now, for the maturation of the STFs, the government identifies the factors that inhibit the growth and development to take the appropriate actions to cope with them. One of the major initiatives is the lifting education and economic development and launch of High Speed of Internet, consequences of which resulted in the establishment of e-centers, free internet at schools and computer skills learning. Government also offers wide variety of services like training to improve their businesses, event scheduling, advertising tourism, visitors record centres; these facilities are provided by various tourism agencies. On darker side, growing competition and envy are seen clearly as barrier to interaction with local institutions and organization. There are some organizations under which these STFs are operated. Some major ones are Tourism New Zealand (TNZ), Central Stage Micro Region (CSMR) and Regional Tourism Organization (RTO)/ Go Wairarapa. Main role of TNZ is to allow little people to fascinate international market where as for RTO, equity and distributions of resources are major concerns. Planning, marketing, HR, ICT (Information and Communication Technologies), networking are some managerial areas and one major where tourism depicts entrepreneurial attitude. Small business owners set up their own in house centres comprising publicising going-ons, customer data and records and used Internet for other efforts. The diverse training ranging from personal training management, ICT, small business management and marketing was given. The business owners from all sectors took pain to learn new skills which can be helpful to run their commerce. They also try to overcome the problems faced during weekdays and peek off periods by capturing international market. These small tourism firms are directly related to local and regional economy, either by means of business services and employment or by purchasing or physical goods. And they also share a deep relation with Banks and accountants. As shown by surveys and interviews, many of the firms are dependent on bank borrowings to pioneer business. In conclusion, tourism business with active participation of both private and public sector and support from government allows an insular region to develop its economy. Literature Analysis Seasonality One of the major problems of tourist industry is Seasonality, a periodical change which occurs every year because of public holidays, occasions or festivals and season.(Chung, 2009) These refashioned patterns can be seen not only in a year but within a month, a calendar week or even in a time of day.(Chung, 2009) It is indicated that pantry, Inns, cafes, general departmental stores are utmost affected businesses. (Jang, 2004) Off periods are always considered as a constraint in tourism industry and these are divided into three categories (Chung, 2009) Employment People working with hospitality and tourism industries expect to have a fixed yearly package but its difficult to employ them for full year. These casual jobs led people to migrate from region in search of better opportunities whose outcome is to increase in salary for same job. Seasonality (Off Periods) Employment Environment Investment FIG:- Classification of Off Periods (Jang, 2004) Investment When it comes to investment, accommodation and warehouses are adversely influenced during this period. As they have to pay fixed amount for physical facilities even in slow seasons. Environment Large number of tourists in peak season causes various environmental problems like air, noise and water pollution. It also stimulate use of plastic bags and bottles which causes environmental problems .(Jang, 2004) Research shows that these off seasons have more adverse effects in rural and isolated areas rather than urban. (Butler, 1993) Beside all these negative effects of seasonality there are some benefits which are necessary to both tourism industry and to nature and its inhabitants. Environment can rejuvenate itself and even entrepreneurs can undergo edifice or some kind of renovation if needed. (Butler, 1993) Many of the suggestions are given to tackle the slow season problem but very few of them have been implemented.(Jang, 2004) It is assumed that we can trim down the seasonality problem to some extent but we cant eliminate it completely. (Butler, 1993) One measure is the financial portfolio theory developed by Markowitz 1952, which can help in reducing the instability in demand to some extent.(Jang, 2004) Business meetings and conferences could be promoted to address the off peak season. Special price offers and discounted prices can help them to tackle the off periods.(Chung, 2009) Terrorism Another problem which causes detrimental effects on tourism industry is the increasing terrorism, a strategy to create the ambience of havoc and instability and terrorisation to threaten the social, constitutional and spiritual motive by numerous exploits of violence like use of explosives, arson, hijacking and many more. (Pizam Smith, 2000) Terrorism had many adverse effects on both, tourists and tourism industry. The graph illustrates the fluctuating immoral events in various years. In 1993-94, according to the graph maximum number of terrorist incidents took place Graph- Number of terrorist incidents per year, 1985-98. (Pizam Smith, 2000) . Who can forget the bombing at London 2005, the train explosion in Spain 2004, attack in Israel 2002 and the most infamous attack in US 9/11 on world trade centre? The global economy and tourism industries are still trying to recover from the deadly effects of tourism. (Moss, Ryan, Moss, 2008). Terrorist activities are ubiquitous to all countries whether it is a developed country or a developing.(Sandler Enders, 2008). Table 1 shows, Iraq is at top of list which endures the maximum number of violence attacks. Top 10 countries terribly affected by terrorism are given below. Table 1- Top 10 countries with terrorist incidents (Terrorism Act 1968-2006) Rank Country Amount (per 1 million) 1 Iraq 439.078 2 Lebanon 329.371 3 Barbados 260.796 4 Israel 228.9 5 West Bank 228.003 6 Gibraltar 107.419 7 Colombia 32.092 8 Cyprus 31.876 9 Algeria 29.852 10 Angola 29.521 Source: World Statistics Website (http://www.nationmaster.com/index.php) Impacts of terrorism Terrorism distress the whole country, its economy and its native peoples.(Sandler Enders, 2008) These terrorist attacks not only detriment the tourism industry but also cause the loss of life, damages to public and private properties and disruption of services like water, electricity, communication etc. Also it affects the global economy and aids obtained from tax and foreign exchange earnings. (Feridun, 2010) Countrys Economy There are many countries whose large part of economy is based on tourism, and Tourism industries contribute to increase in GDP (Gross domestic product), employment, economic growth and education. (Lee Chang, 2008) For example: In New Zealand, $6.5 billion of GDP was generated in year 2010 (New Zealand Statistics www.stats.govt.nz) So targeting some of the most famous tourist destinations can be the ultimate approach to bang the economy of a country and its international image as well. (Feridun, 2010) Top ten tourism destinations are given below according to world statistics. Table 2:- Top 10 tourism destinations in Year 1980 1997 Rank Country Tourist Arrivals (Thousands) Share of Arrivals World-wide (%age) Average annual growth (%age) 1997 1980 1997 1980 1980-1997 1 France 66864 30100 10.95 10.5 4.8 2 USA 47754 22500 7.82 7.9 4.5 3 Spain 43403 22388 7.11 7.9 4.0 4 Italy 34087 22087 5.58 7.7 2.6 5 UK 25515 12420 4.18 4.3 4.3 6 China 23770 3500 3.89 2.0 7.6 7 Poland 19520 5664 3.20 2.0 7.6 8 Mexico 19351 11945 3.17 4.2 2.9 9 Canada 17285 12876 2.83 4.5 1.8 10 Hungary 17248 9413 2.82 3.3 3.6 Source:-world trade organisation website (www.wto.org) Air Travel Many business sectors face the harsh impacts of Terrorism and the Air travel is one of them. It was found that after the 9/11 attack on US, these travel and resorts industries were hit hardly. About 240 contracts were cancelled in only Las Vegas, US. People were reluctant to fly even after 2 years of assault. Similarly in Spain (Mallorca) 96% of tourist come via air and 50% of its revenue is derived from tourist. But after the bombing in Mallorca, Spain, It was proposed that the international travel revenue fell up to $29.1 billion that year. (Moss et al., 2008) Also air travellers have to pay new levied taxes on air tickets, fuel and long queues in security checks. Media also plays a significant role in disheartening people by covering the incident place and discourages people from international travel. (Pizam Smith, 2000). It can set off the successful and extravagant journey of tourism industry to an end. Lesson for SMEs The objective of this research was to explain the two ever green problems of tourism industries. Many destinations are enduring the terrorism and yearly seasonality problem. These problems are responsible for the falloff businesses, low GDP, sometimes loss of public property and low employment to population ratio which directly contributes to loss in countrys economy. This paper focuses on the negative effects of seasonality with some remedies like financial portfolio and special offers during off season to minimize it. It depicts that though seasonality leads to drowning away of income but beside all these it also has some positive effects, especially from the environmental latent. A break after the gigantic peak season is needed by the atmosphere to refresh itself. Its like servicing your car engine to reduce wear n tear and to achieve enhanced performance. Terrorism or felony has been introduced as new emerging problem in tourist industries which was neglected earlier. The research shows that terrorist attacks disturb all nations but majorly the ones which have tourism as a backbone for their survival. Data depicts that there was increasing number of missive attacks from mid of 80s to 90s. this creates the Terrophobia all around the world. People are afraid to travel to the targeted destinations because of the massive destruction done by the terrorists. And the unintentional participation of media in spreading the gossip to raise their TRPs, make the things bad to worse. Its true to say that the terrorism is inherently unpredictable as the earthquakes and tsunami. So both Government and local people have to take active steps to control such violence, by creating awareness about terrorism among peoples and by providing tight and unbreakable security. Even after so much study, still its not clear that if tourism is a honey pot for the te rrorism or they are just the victims of one of their cruel activities. No effort can lead us to abolish these problems so some precautions should be taken against them. We should learn from the previously affected destinations and should prepare ourselves for the crisis either by allocating a squad for the crises management or by assigning permissible authorities. Further research is needed to find the other factors which are responsible for weakening of trade Tourism. Also its affects in a developed or developing country is still an open minded question.

Banned Books

According to Dosomething. org, more than 60% of teens are doing or have done drugs at one time. Go Ask Alice should be banned from middle school and elementary libraries and only permitted at the high school level because of the use of vulgar language, the use of illegal substances, and the explicit descriptions of the activities being done throughout the book. One reason this book should be banned is the use of vulgar language. The foul language used in this book is not appropriate for middle school nor elementary ibraries, but acceptable to more mature audiences like high school. An example of this occurs toward the middle of the book when, the main character, Alice and her friend are at a party that gets out of hand and she's talking about it the next day, â€Å"Last night was the worst night of my shitty, rotten, stinky, dreary, f*cked up life. † (Sparks, 58) Another example toward the beginning of the book when she's expressing her feelings about that day, â€Å"l feel aw fully bitched and pissed off at everybody†¦ I Just want to puke all over the shitty world. † (Sparks, 82, 83) Next, nother reason Go Ask Alice should be banned is the excessive use of illegal substances. The drug use written throughout the book is not appropriate for middle school or elementary, but should be permitted for high school level. In Go Ask Alice there are many illegal substance references throughout the entire book. An example happens toward the beginning when she's at a small hang out and is unknowingly consuming a spiked drink. â€Å"Then I noticed the strange shifting patterns on the ceiling†¦ I watched the pattern change to swirling colors, great fields of reds, blues, ellows. (Sparks 25) Another example toward the middle is when she and her friend are roped into selling drugs to young kids, â€Å"†¦ so Chris and I have both had to push pot†¦ I convinced Richie that it would be easier to push acid than pot†¦ † (Sparks, 45) This u sage continues throughout the book. A third, and final, reason why this book should be banned is because of the explicit descriptions. The explicit descriptions used are not acceptable for middle school or elementary libraries, but can be deemed appropriate for high school. This whole book is very detailed and explicit in its descriptions. One of the many examples is when she is waking up after a wild party, â€Å"Well last night it happened. I am no longer a virgin! † (Keep in mind she is only 14) (Sparks, 27) Then she talks about her boyfriend, â€Å"Richie is so good, good, good to me and sex with him is like lightning and rainbows and springtime! † (Sparks, 44) Still talking about her boyfriend, â€Å"He teases me and says I am oversexed because I have been bugging him to let me try sex without being stoned first. Sparks, 46) A final example is toward the ending of the book discussing the death of her grandmother, â€Å"Gran died in her sleep last night. I tried t o tell myself that she's gone to Gramps, but I am so depressed all I can think about is worms eating her body. † (Sparks, 115) This book has sparked controversy in whether or not it should be banned to middle school and elementary. Go Ask Alice should be banned to middle school and elementary because it is not appropriate to expose them to the contents in the book. But reasons it shouldn't be banned for high school libraries is because they are a more mature most worldly things that this book shouldn't corrupt them too much. So this book should be banned for middle school and elementary but permitted to high school because of the usage of vulgar language, the use of illegal substances, and the explicit descriptions written throughout the book. Just think, would you want your young child exposed to this type of literature and have it possibly have an influence in their behaviors?

Battling over bottled water

Spring, which is on a private deer-hunting ranch, to the bottling plant. Locals are questioning whom the water Nestle is pumping belongs to. The argument is that although Nestle owns the land, the water is a public resource. Within the Utilitarian theory, in the eyes of the Nestle Company, their actions can be deemed ethical for the fact that the bottling plant has created a substantial amount of jobs for the locals. It was stated that the 262 million gallons of water being pumped are less than one percent of the annual charge rate of the local watershed. The sacrifice of a small percentage of the public body of water to create jobs and bottled water is ethical within the utilitarian theory. In Robert Nick's entitlement theory, you are entitled to as much property as you want, as long as it was acquired the right way. Sanctuary Springs is viewed as a public source of water. Which means Nestle is completely entitled to use the water, whether that means drinking it or pumping it to a bo ttling plant. Nestles actions are completely ethical within Nick's theory.Under John Rails theory of ethics, Nestles actions are ethical as well. Rails theory states that the action must benefit the weakest members of society. The company has built bottling plant that employs about a hundred people. Town ship supervisor Maxine McClellan is has stated â€Å"This is probably the best project we've ever brought into Mascots County†¦ A diversified economy where our kids don't have to move away to find jobs.

The Hourglass Technique

The Hourglass Technique Most of us during school and then in our careers have to write research papers and reports and analyze. Some of us go on to write journal articles or textbooks, nonfiction books, or even novels as freelancers. At some point, we have to take a subject, narrow it to a related topic, decide on a thesis to express our idea, and write an organized text to communicate that idea or plot and its conclusions and deliver a well-received document. The problem is that too often we get lost in the process and end up straying off topic or have trouble connecting our ideas or forming a clear thesis from the topic and then an argument strategy that relates to that topic and its thesis. Why does that happen? Because we have so many ideas about our topic or so many argument points, we simply have too many cooks in the kitchen to suggest a simple metaphor. What is the solution then? Is there a clearly stated technique we can apply that keeps us from saying too much or not being focused in a paper? Yes, t here is. Its a technique I used when I taught research paper and students told me they were panicked about writing a longer paper on one topic. They wanted to write a good paper, but got lost in the process. Its the Hourglass Technique of Writing. It is really simple and actually derived from the concept of outlining, but more visual and interactive in nature (which helps a lot of writers arrange their thinking as they plan a paper). We all know what an hourglass is – two connected glass bulbs with sand that slowly flows from the top bulb to the bottom bulb through a narrow passage that connects the two. A 3-minute egg timer is a good example. The sand at the top flows through the narrow passageway into the bottom bulb until 3 minutes are up. Then we simply turn the hourglass upside down to restart the timing process again.Lets consider the image of the hourglass and think about how a broad subject for writing must narrow to become a focused topic. Then that topic needs to nar row further still to become a precise thesis statement. At that point, were at the narrow connection where the two bulbs of the hourglass meet. Using this image, we can move from the broad to the focused idea and develop a precise and significant thesis that relates back to the original topic we had when we started and produces a precisely related thesis statement. That statement becomes the precise question or hypothesis we then use to develop arguments and the discussion and work toward a logical conclusion. This downward selective narrowing process can look something like this: Main Subject narrowed to your Topic; then your Topic narrowed further downward to a Working Thesis, and finally, that Working Thesis narrowed to your focused Thesis Statement at the narrowest point in your writing hourglass. This is the first step – narrowing our ideas, so we can see the direction we want to take for the whole paper. We create our thesis statement from the too broad a subject that in trigued us in the first place and left us with too many ideas and confusion about how to proceed to narrow our thinking. So whats next? Well, we simply move to the bottom part of the hourglass – the lower bulb. Our thesis statement now becomes a new topic for developing 3-4 main argument points related to our main thesis. All these main argument points derive from and relate back to your main thesis and from there back to your original topic and overall discipline or genre needed for your work. However, we have narrowed our thinking, so each argument point is carefully set apart and becomes its own hourglass that narrows to a sub-thesis and then expands to produce related detail to argue that sub-thesis. Indeed, we can go through the same exact thinking process as we did with the major thesis statement and develop each argument points expanded detail and that support. Thus, when we have finished the journey from the top of the hourglass to the bottom, we have expanded our think ing from an original broad subject to a thesis statement and then from that statement to 3-4 main argument points. We then develop each argument point as its own hourglass to find our sub-arguments and their support. In effect, what you have is the reverse of the first narrowing process: You use your main Thesis Statement to determine your first main Argument to support it. Then you determine an Argument Thesis from which you develop Sub-Arguments and then expand those to Argument Support to deliver your details and thinking for each Sub-Argument.Each argument in your paper can go through the same hourglass process where the argument becomes a sub-topic and then is narrowed to produced a sub-thesis statement and then expanded (just like an hourglass at the bottom) to gather support, illustrations, and explanations. All of these relate back directly to your main thesis statement and your original topic and genre.Try the concept. Draw a group of hourglasses on a piece of paper and use them as separate thinking tools to help you narrow a topic visually and then expand the thesis youve discovered into main arguments that repeat the same process. You can even stack the hourglasses if you want to make the thinking process on your topic a bit more complex. Narrow each main argument into its own thesis and then expand it to contain its own argument and supporting evidence.By segmenting your thinking, youll be more precise, yet more abstract in your thinking, and definitely more creative. Youll find your thinking will be better organized and yet integrated and connected. It works. I use the concept all the time in different writing genres. Eventually, it becomes second nature and one of your key writing tools.

Reynolds and George G. Meade.   A month later, the division was added to Major General George Sykes V Corps in Meades Army of the Potomac.   Marching north with two brigades, Crawfords men joined in the pursuit of General Robert E. Lees Army of Northern Virginia.   Upon reaching the Pennsylvania border, Crawford halted the division and gave a rousing speech imploring his men to defend their home state. Arriving at the Battle of Gettysburg around noon on July 2, the Pennsylvania Reserves paused for brief respite near Powers Hill.   Around 4:00 PM, Crawford received orders to take his men south to aid in blocking an attack by Lieutenant General James Longstreets corps.   Moving out, Sykes removed one brigade and sent it to support the line on Little Round Top.   Reaching a point just north of that hill with his remaining brigade, Crawford paused as Union troops driven from the Wheatfield retreated through his lines.   With support from Colonel David J. Nevins VI Corps brigade, Crawford led a charge across Plum Run and drove back the approaching Confederates.   In the course of the attack, he seized the divisions colors and personally led his men forward.   Successful in halting the Confederate advance, the divisions efforts forced the enemy back across the Wheatfield for the night. Samuel Crawford - Overland Campaign: In the weeks after the battle, Crawford was compelled to take leave due to issues relating to his Antietam wound and malaria which he had contracted during his time in Charleston.   Resuming command of his division in November, he led it during the abortive Mine Run Campaign.   Surviving the reorganization of the Army of the Potomac the following spring, Crawford retained command of his division which served in Major General Gouverneur K. Warrens V Corps.   In this role, he took part in Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grants Overland Campaign that May which saw his men engaged at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, and Totopotomoy Creek.   With the expiration of the bulk of his mens enlistments, Crawford was shifted to lead a different division in V Corps on June 2. A week later, Crawford took part in the beginning of the Siege of Petersburg and in August saw action at Globe Tavern where he was wounded in the chest.   Recovering, he continuing to operate around Petersburg through the fall and received a brevet promotion to major general in December.   On April 1, Crawfords division moved with V Corps and a force of Union cavalry to attack Confederate forces at Five Forks under the overall command of Major General Philip Sheridan.   Due to faulty intelligence, it initially missed the Confederate lines, but later played a role in the Union victory.   Ã‚   Samuel Crawford - Later Career: With the collapse of the Confederate position at Petersburg the next day, Crawfords men took part in resulting Appomattox Campaign which saw Union forces pursue Lees army west.   On April 9, V Corps aided in hemming in the enemy at Appomattox Court House which led to Lee surrendering his army.   With the end of the war, Crawford traveled to Charleston where he took part in ceremonies that saw the American flag re-hoisted above Fort Sumter.   Remaining in the army for another eight years, he retired on February 19, 1873 with the rank of brigadier general.   In the years after the war, Crawford earned the ire of several other Civil War leaders by repeatedly attempting to claim that his efforts at Gettysburg saved Little Round Top and were key to the Union victory. Traveling extensively in his retirement, Crawford also worked to preserve land at Gettysburg.   These efforts saw him purchase the land along Plum Run over which his division charged.   In 1887, he published  The Genesis of the Civil War: The Story of Sumter, 1860-1861 which detailed the events leading up to the battle and was the result of twelve years of research.   Crawford died on November 3, 1892 at Philadelphia and was buried in the citys Laurel Hill Cemetery.   Ã‚   Selected Sources Gettysburg: Major General Samuel CrawfordStone Sentinels: Major General Samuel CrawfordFind a Grave: Major General Samuel Crawford

International Terrorism Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

International Terrorism - Assignment Example terrorist groups are bad governance, corrupt politicians, religious sensitivity, lack of security to the common people, generation of funds through illegal activities and planting terror in the hearts of the innocent. The results are disastrous and deadly for all. Article 10 describes the state of Somalia as a state of terror where people are scared even to talk over the phone for long. The Al Shabab, the Islamist militia, has taken full control over Somalia. Innocent people living there are forced to join their groups, harsh punishments are given to those who commit any mistake and their interpretation of Islam is forced upon the residents of Somalia. This is a result of ill governance. Lack of any kind of authority control motivates such terrorist groups to work actively without any fear (Petrou, 2009) Apart from the risky task of migrating to nearby places of Somalia, acquitted people of Somalia are helpless. They are ruled by fear. It becomes difficult for United states to send help to these places because, first of all, it is very expensive, secondly there is not just one group like this; in fact, groups  like them,  can be easily found anywhere in the world where there are poorly functioning governments, and to our disadvantage; the  above  kinds  of  groups  help each other in times of trouble. It is absolutely useless to talk and negotiate with such groups as they refuse to accept the other party’s terms and conditions and blackmail them to fulfill their demands at any cost. However, things can be brought under control by making sure that governments of  all the countries around the world are strong, honest and maintaining law and order in the country ( Petrou, 2009). Sometimes it is due to the corrupt politicians who plan a strategy to create such conditions throughout the country that lead to political violence throughout the country as it happened in Greece and Colombia. In Article 11, we read that in Greece, the terror was spread by a guerrilla
